5th Grade - 3rd Quarter Objectives 2011/12
Math
- To be able to develop, demonstrate, and apply measurement concepts
- To be able to develop, demonstrate, and apply geometric concepts
- To be able to construct convincing arguments and proofs to solve problems
- To be able to collect, organize and describe data
- To be able to determine, describe, and apply the probabilities of events
*Please review weekly math extended response problems with your child.
Reading
- To be able to distinguish the main idea and supporting details in any text
- To be able to identify the main idea of a selection when it is not explicitly stated
- To be able to determine how authors and illustrators express their ideas
- To be able to draw inferences, conclusions or generalizations about text, and support them with textual evidence and prior knowledge
- To be able to determine the answer to literal or simple inference question regarding the meaning of a passage
- To read a variety of literary works
We will continue to review objectives from previous quarters.
Writing 
- Write for a variety of purposes and specified audiences in a variety of forms
- Write using adjectives and adverbs to enrich writing

- Understand and explain social systems in the United States; compare culture as reflected in language, literature, the arts, traditions and institutions
- Use maps and other geographic representations and instruments to gather information and interpret data about people, places and environments
- Apply reading strategies to improve understanding and fluency
- Read and understand literature representative of various societies, eras and ideas with an emphasis on the Colonial, Revolutionary and Post-Revolutionary Period.
- Write to communicate for a variety of purposes
- Listen and speak effectively in a variety of situations

- Analyze and evaluate information acquired from various sources, primary and secondary
