2007-08 The Sutherland Band
Dear Band Parents,
This year’s Solo and Ensemble contest will be held after school at Sutherland on April 24th – 25th. This is the tim e of the year where the most intense practice is heard throughout Beverly and frankly the most growth realized on each individual instrument. Yes, it can be a bit scary, but solo and small ensemble playing develops a confidence and swagger that will build self esteem to noticeably higher levels. All band members have been working on a solo and are strongly encouraged to attend. This year’s judging will again be done by Mr. Konieczny, Sutherland music teacher, who all band members know.
After registering, each student will be given a time to play for Mr. Konieczny between 3:00 p.m. – 4:15 p.m. on April 24th & 25th. Each student should warm up after school in the designated room and then be ready to play at their assigned time. The day of their solo, each participant should dress up as part of their scoring is based on this. (No athletic shoes, jeans or sweats.) After playing, students are free to leave. Results can be seen and will be discussed at their following lesson. Awards will be recognized at the Spring Concert on June 5th.
Good Luck!

Quinlan and Fabish's website is www.qandf.com . This is not the only place students can purchase an instrument, but it is a company that makes regular visits to me for repairs and supplies. Any Parent/student can purchase supplies from them which will be hand delivered to me weekly.
Greetings to all Band Parents!
Hi. I hope you all had great summers and are ready once again to have your children experience the opportunity of band this year. We plan to continue growing musically and other way in Band this year, preparing them for high school music, if they so desire. Concert Band rehearsals will be on Thursday mornings and Cadet Band will be on Fridays, with their lessons throughout the day. Again for this year, I would like all 2nd year players to practice with the Cadet Band as well as with the Concert Band. Cadet Band rehearsals will begin on Friday, November 3rd.
CONCERT BAND
For 2nd-5th year players who demonstrate skill levels and practice requirements for this group – First Rehearsal and Lessons will take place on Thursday, September 13th (7:55 a.m. set up) 8:00 a.m.
CADET BAND
For all 2nd year players and beginners 4th Grade and up (and other Concert Band members who would like extra practice and the chance to help younger players) – Listening Surveys, instrument demonstrations, personal interviews, throughout September – Parent/Instrument Rental Open House in October (TBA). Lessons will be on Friday and start in October (during school day). First Rehearsal will take place on Friday, November 2rd (7:55 a.m. set up) 8:00 a.m.
Learning to play a musical instrument has many benefits – enjoyment of an art, a sense of accomplishment, cooperation, coordination, how to express oneself, history, and discipline to stick to a task. This is why your part in consistent practice is very much appreciated. Please make a habit of signing weekly practice schedules which are graded.
Band members please arrive at school between 7:50 and 8:00 a.m. After 8:00, you will need to be “buzzed” in to enter the building. Band rehearsals start at 8:00 a.m. Rehearsal attendance is mandatory and very important, being that we only rehearse as a group once a week. Therefore, also a major part of their grade is dependent on it. Thank you for your help in getting your child to all of these rehearsals. Parents please send a written excuse if your child is unable to attend before or after school rehearsal.
Band tuition this year will be $150 per semester for one child. For families with two children in Band, the semester payments will be $250. Books will be provided, as needed. Semester payments are due October 12th for Concert Band, (October 31st for Cadet Band) and January 31st. Payments after these dates will have $20 late fees. (For those with siblings that will be in Cadet Band, a separate statement for the Cadet Band member will be issued for the first semester payment.)
Thanks for your involvement in Music!
