Music Program Highlights

Sutherland School provides many fine arts opportunities to its students, including one 40-minute music class per week, intended to both follow the state music curriculum, and develop skills appropriate to specific age levels.graphic

Grades K - 1 Emphasis is on coordination and socialization skills. This level begins building a simple repertoire of songs such as nursery rhymes play and work songs, and patriotic music

Grades 2 - 3 These grade levels will continue to build song repertoire and well as begin music literacy and simple harmony. Strong emphasis in grade 3 on music literacy is intended to make students ready for entrance in the school band

Grade 4 This is an extremely important level since it is the first time that students may join the school band. Heavy emphasis is put on music literacy. These students are also introduced to opera in the classroom, during a backstage tour of the Lyric Opera, and during visits by Lyric Opera docents.

Grades 5 - 6 Both levels will attend Chicago Symphony performances. 5th grade engages in the “National Anthem Project’, and studies music which reflects society culture and politics. 6th grade now becomes an MYP level and will begin following the philosophy of the International Baccalaureate Program, and having assignments using that particular scoring rubric.

Grades 7 - 8 Advanced IB assignments are given to these levels. 7th grade will prepare for fine arts questions on ISAT. Emphasis in 8th grade is on evaluating music leading up to choice of graduation music.

Choir This is a voluntary, before school activity intended to develop performance skills and advanced literacy. Available to students in grades 1 - 5, the choir is expected to perform in school assemblies, community functions, and competitions.
