French - 1st Quarter 2011/2012Oh, the joie of it all! Want to win at English? Learn French. French and English are both intimately related. They share many word origins and characteristics, being that at one time England was ruled by a French king. That makes French a good choice for every English speaker, whether you are an enfant, étudiant, or just one of the famille. It's magnifique, chérie! You don't have to be a génie to learn French. Even Descartes would agree. Once you learn the basics, every French student can become parfait. French is very American. It has worked its way into our world. French has, in reality, become every day English. We check the weather while consulting the journal and plan a rendez-vous once we learn of beau temps as the soirée approaches. French helps us make our way in American pop culture. How can one understand the deep meaning of The Da Vinci Code without knowledge of French civilisation and culture? And what about Rémi in Ratatouille, Geneviève in Madeline, and Célèste in Babar? French can be helpful wherever the voyage may take you...be it to la Belgique, un restaurant, a nearby boutique, or purely a bit of joie de vivre in a chaise longue at your château-maison. A little French can help you in business, be it as an employée or patron. After all, France is the most visited country in the world. French is the language of diplomacy. It is the working official language of the United Nations, UNESCO, NATO, the Council of Europe, the European Community, and the Court of Justice. The Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Declaration of Independence are closely related. Attention, though: there are some tricks. Soccer is football, and football is football américain. If you are out smoking, you are in a tuxedo. A collège is a junior high school. A roman is not some Italian guy; it's a novel. The hotel de ville is the town hall; not a place to make overnight reservations. Knowing some French can be practical if your auto is being seen by a mécanicien, and you want to explore the provinces with your valises. See how portable French can be? In fact, portable in French is a mobile phone. Portable. I think they've got something there. M. (Merci) Sure, English is a must. But French is a plus. So take a cue from me, and improve your English by learning a little French along with your children. 7th graders will be dealing with meeting people, time and weather, family and friends, and daily activities. We value your help, and look forward to your support as we engage in our promotional event this spring. Contact me to offer your suggestions, ideas, and time as we work together this year! Vive le français! Monsieur WAX Please note: This site is best viewed in a full browser window. |
