LSC Minutes - 9/12/06

Sutherland Elementary Local School Council
Meeting Minutes
September 12, 2006
Sutherland Library

  1. The meeting began at 4:00 p.m.
  1. Roll was taken; present members were Bill Cahill, Rosalind Faulkner, Catherine Gannon, Reggie O’Connor, Susan Poole, Cathy Shepherd, Donna Somerville, Aronzo Traylor, and Charlie Zarzecki.

  2. Minutes from the August 8, 2006 meeting were read and approved (motion-Charlie Zarzecki, second-Cathy Shepherd).
  1. Principal’s Report - Ms. Gannon distributed a copy of items to be discussed in her report.
    1. The opening of school went very well. Reports from teachers indicate that opening day was very smooth.   Attendance was “awesome” and spirits were high.
    2. 795 students are enrolled at  Sutherland.  Grades 1, 6, and 7 are at or above 30 students per classroom.
    3. To date the survey requesting volunteers resulted in: Reading Buddies (10), PBS (10), Math Coaches (5), Office Help (14), Special Events (17).  We are hoping to recruit more volunteers at Open House.  We still need additional Reading Buddies, Math Coaches, and PBS volunteers.
    4.  Cell tower funds from Cingular have been deposited.
    5. The new front door has been installed. The additional computers that were ordered will arrive within the next week.  The tables for the computers already arrived.
    6. Learning First tests for grades 3-8 went off today without a hitch.
    7. This week we will also have an after school workshop for DIBELS training.  Several teachers have already participated in a DIBELS training and begun testing.  Grades K-2 will be signed up for DIBELS data system, which is funded through the University of Oregon.
    8. We have been awarded a grant for an after school tutoring program.  The program will be very limited and students who demonstrate the most need will be selected to participate.  We will begin with grades 4-8 for the first semester.  The Board of Ed has not yet released the funds so details will follow as to dates and times.
    9. Ms. Gannon is working on a letter to supplement the school handbook that would detail the Sutherland School Building Security policy.
  1. Public Comment - Abra Macellaio spoke.  She is working on “I Madonnari” and looking for artists/craftspeople to sell their work at the fair.  She also spoke about the trouble on the playground this past summer.  She suggested having trees trimmed or more lights installed.  Ms. Gannon told her about the signs she has ordered for the playground.  She also mentioned that she is meeting with Alderman Rugai on Friday to discuss the status of security cameras and that she has called Commander Garrity asking for more patrols.  Lastly she suggested that if people witness foul play to call the police right away.  Abra also suggested having school start 15 minutes earlier and being released by 2:30 to accommodate after school activities.  Ms. Gannon said this would be a hard thing to accomplish at this time.
  1.  Delegate Reports
    1. PPLC (Curriculum) - Reggie O’Connor and Rosalind Faulkner met with Ms. Gannon to go over in-house issues.
    2. PTA – Looking for “I Madonnari” volunteers.
    3. Buildings and Grounds - We need to right a committee description that states what the LSC is responsible for versus what the maintenance staff is responsible for.  Donna Somerville is waiting for the new light fixtures to arrive.  The funds needed to install the fixtures have been approved.  The paint in Ms. Carberry’s kindergarten class is peeling on the ceiling.  Ms. Gannon has someone coming out to fix it.
    4. School Climate - Girls basketball has started already.  Ron, Ms. Gannon, and Ms. Cody are meeting tomorrow about required documentation for the program.  Ron praised the PAWS program and said children are very enthused about it.
  2. Community Rep. Candidate Forum - Three possible candidates for the open position of Community Representative made brief introductions.  The candidates include: Mara Petraitis, Sanaa Hachem, and Michael Barnum.  Ron Traylor will call a brief meeting and we will decide on a candidate before the end of the week.
  1. New Business
    1. Building and Grounds Committee description - The description needs to include: Landscaping, Beautification, Cleanup, Interior Maintenance, and Safety.  The description also needs to outline what the staff is expected to do and what the LSC/Volunteers are expected to do.  Susan Poole will write a sample description and bring it to the October meeting for approval.
    2.  School Climate Committee description - The description needs to include Sports, Items that Invoke School Spirit, Student Council, Positive Behavior, and Community Service through the IB Program.  Susan Poole will write a sample description and bring it to the October meeting for approval.
    3. Web Site Public Comment - Susan Poole will check with the web master to assess the feasibility of having a link from the LSC section of the Sutherland website to an email address which would accept questions/comments for the LSC.  Ron Traylor verified that the CPS Law Department will allow the LSC to have this tool.
  1. Old Business
    1. Cathy Shepherd is looking into a Sunday afternoon at the Beverly Art Center for a reception to meet Ms. Gannon.  Hopefully this will be free of charge to Sutherland.
    2. Ron Traylor mentioned that he had information on upcoming LSC training available at Julian.
    3. Cell Tower Update - Cingular has finished their antenna.  Verizon will start after October 15th.
    4. Fraudulent Enrollment - We are waiting on a response from Arne Duncan or Mr. Raglan, his assistant.
  1. Public Comment - A new parent, Sandra Hudson, mother of a fifth grade daughter, introduced herself.  She said she is glad to be a part of the Sutherland community and is looking forward to volunteering.  She asked about after school programs for her daughter.  Ron Traylor and Susan Poole will speak with her after the meeting.
  1. Next LSC meeting will be October 10, 2006 at 7:00 p.m.
  1. The meeting was adjourned at 5:10 p.m.
