LSC Minutes - 09/11/07

Sutherland Elementary Local School Council
Meeting Minutes
September 11, 2007
Sutherland Auditorium           

  1. The meeting began at 4:00 p.m.
  2. Roll was taken; present members were: Michael Barnum, Bill Cahill, Rosalind Faulkner, Catherine Gannon, Reggie O’Connor, Susan Poole, Donna Somerville, Ron Traylor, and Charlie Zarzecki.
  3. Minutes from the July 10, 2007 meeting were read and approved.
  4. Principal’s Report- Ms. Gannon distributed a report.
    1. ISAT results are in and will go home on Monday.  We had the highest scores ever in reading and math.
    2. There have been individual meetings with teachers regarding new students in their classrooms.
    3. New materials have been ordered for teachers in grades K-5.
    4. Professional development activities during the first three days of school included differentiated instruction, leveled reading, curriculum development/alignment and IB global awareness. 
    5. SIPAAA belief statements and goals that were worked on last year are out for final approval.
    6. Cook County Youth Service Program began their workshops this week.
    7. The Peace Pole dedication took place on September 12th.  Some students  will also attend Doctors Without Borders in Grant Park.
    8. Volunteers are needed for Reading Buddies, PAWS and Parent Patrol.
    9. Entertainment books will be sold and proceeds will go to maintain and improve the website.
    10. A team of staff members has been formed to facilitate the next steps in the PAWS program.
    11. No school on September 26th for Professional Development.
    12. Parents of absent children have been called daily if they have not phoned in first.
    13. On September 29th a film crew from the movie Cache rented space at Sutherland.
    14. The Sutherland reunion classes of 61,62 and 63 visited the school on July 28th.  They donated $880 toward the library fund.
    15. Residency is going well.
    16. Registration went well.  We have 754 students enrolled.
    17. Verizon has not yet begun work on their cell tower.
    18. Learning First tests will be administered on September 18th-21st.
    19. Dibels assessments will take place until the end of September.
  5. Public Comment- Grace Zarzecki, a fifth grader, talked about the need to recycle more at school.  Luke Zarzecki, a fourth grader, suggested Sutherland have a fundraiser similar to “Fisherfest”.
  6. Delegate Reports
    1. PPLC (Curriculum)-nothing to report
    2. PTA- The budget for the new school year was discussed. They purchased a portable sound system for the school.  They are looking for a new chair for Parent Patrol.
    3. Buildings and Grounds- There may be a fall cleanup scheduled.  Marty will also investigate a trash blockage in one of the sewers in the grass that may be causing standing water.
    4. School Climate- In order to address parent concerns regarding athletic fees and procedures Ron Traylor will meet with Sue Cody to obtain documentation of procedures.
  7. New Business
    1. Additional information should be added to the LSC section of the web site.
    2. Ron will investigate further LSC training for the coming year.
  8. Old Business
    1. It was decided that a brief survey would be sent to the staff to determine whether they are/are not in favor of uniforms.
