LSC Minutes - 10/09/07

Sutherland Elementary Local School Council
Meeting Minutes
October 9, 2007
Sutherland Auditorium    

  1. The meeting began at 4:00 p.m.
  2. Roll was taken; present members were: Michael Barnum, Bill Cahill, Bill Cunningham, Rosalind Faulkner, Catherine Gannon, Susan Poole, Donna Somerville, Ron Traylor, and Charlie Zarzecki.
  3. Minutes from the September 11, 2007 meeting were read and approved with two changes: Michael Barnum was present and Ron Traylor, not the entire LSC, will meet with Sue Cody regarding athletic fees.
  4. Principal’s Report- Ms. Gannon distributed a report.
    1. Individual meetings with teachers about the students in their classrooms have occurred.  At the end of the quarter they will meet to discuss progress and concerns.
    2. New materials have been ordered for teachers in grades K-5 for the improvement of small group, leveled, differentiated instruction in reading and the content areas.
    3. Many professional development activities have been completed during the first month of school.
    4. Feedback was received regarding the SIPAAA belief statements and goals.
    5. Teachers have been participating in professional development activities to support the Chicago Reading Initiative.
    6. Several eighth graders are moving on to the second French book for the first time at Sutherland.
    7. French is the language studied at Sutherland because it was the language offered with the IB program.  In order to keep the IB program which funds many different programs at Sutherland we must maintain French as our foreign language.
    8. Sadecki’s Puppets visited Sutherland compliments of the PTA.
    9. Special field trips including Doctors Without Borders and Cool Globes made a huge impact on the students.
    10. Parent Patrol has ten members.  Reading Buddies volunteers will begin training soon.  PAWS volunteers will begin in November.
    11. On October 30th we will have Maurice Woods of CPS as Principal for a Day. 
    12. We are working on the second phase of the PAWS program.
    13. There will be no school on October 19th and November 2nd for Professional Development.  Report card pick up will take place on November 8th.
    14. Families of absent children have been receiving calls if they have not called in first.
    15. The staff completed the uniform survey and 49% were in favor and 51% were against a uniform policy.
    16. Residency is going well.
    17. Verizon has been working on their initial set up for their cell tower.
    18. In January the newsletter is going paperless and will appear on-line only.
  5. Public Comment- Amy Lux handed out information regarding recess in public schools.
  6. Delegate Reports
    1. PPLC (Curriculum)-nothing to report
    2. PTA- Parents Night Out will be in February.
    3. Buildings and Grounds- There may be a fall cleanup scheduled.
    4. School Climate- Ron Traylor will meet with Sue Cody to discuss feedback received from the coaches meeting.  Ron said the purchase of a defibulator will also be discussed. Student council classroom elections will take place this week.  Officer elections will take place in November.

    1. Ron suggested that each LSC member review available information regarding uniforms and prepare a statement for/against uniforms for the November meeting.
    2. It was suggested that LSC members also review new LSC manuals and websites and prepare a list of proposed additions/changes to the current LSC home page.

  2. Return from Executive Session- a vote was taken and Melissa Ciezki, the only teacher to submit a letter of intent for the open teacher representative position, was unanimously voted in.

  4. Next LSC meeting is November 13, 2007 at 4:00 p.m.
  5. The meeting was adjourned at 5:40 p.m.
