Sutherland Elementary Local School Council
Meeting Minutes
November 13, 2007
Sutherland Auditorium
- The meeting began at 4:00 p.m.
- Roll was taken; present members were: Melissa Ciezki, Bill Cunningham, Rosalind Faulkner, Catherine Gannon, Susan Poole, Donna Somerville, Ron Traylor, and Charlie Zarzecki.
- Minutes from the October 9, 2007 meeting were read and approved.
- Principal’s Report- Ms. Gannon distributed a report.
- Individual meetings with teachers about the students in their classrooms have occurred.
- New materials have been ordered for teachers in grades K-5 for the improvement of small group, leveled, differentiated instruction in reading and the content areas.
- Many professional development activities have been completed during the first month of school.
- Formal classroom observations have occurred for non-tenured teachers and are in process for tenured teachers.
- SIPAAA- the new template is on line. Two LSC members are needed for the core budget committee.
- Reading- We continue to purchase materials for our best practices in Literacy.
- Kindergarten applications for next year are being submitted.
- Parent patrol has ten signed members assisting in mornings and afternoons. Kitty Carroll is coordinating the winter tiered award for PAWS.
- We had five principals for a day.
- The PAWS team has met and come up with great ideas for classroom rewards. Planning is also underway for the second phase of PAWS.
- No school on November 22 and 23rd.
- Families of absent children have been receiving calls if they have not called in first.
- Verizon wireless has been working periodically for initial set-up.
- Residency is going well.
- In January the newsletter is going paperless and will appear on-line only.
- Student Council elections will take place next week.
- In December Rosetta Stone subscriptions will be offered again.
- IB students are sponsoring “Pennies for Peace” in November.
- The Stew Crew is collecting coats, shoes and canned goods for the needy from November 9-16th.

- Delegate Reports
- PPLC (Curriculum)-nothing to report
- PTA- Virtues program is going well, gourmet foods fundraiser going on now, Parent Patrol has been successful. Giovina Podlasek was commended for her volunteer efforts with the Parent Patrol. The PTA purchased an art cart for Ms. Mastropoulo.
- Buildings and Grounds- Sue is trying to contact Campus Parks program to see about getting some dead bushes replaced.
- School Climate- Ron Traylor met with the sports committee and they reviewed guidelines for the cost of participation and allocation of team funds. They are working on writing these guidelines. Ms. Gannon said she is working on obtaining a defibulator with the sports funds.
- New Business- Ms. Gannon handed out an activity report for the cell tower funds. There was a discussion concerning how cell tower funds, materials fees and PTA funds are to be used. Donna and Sue will talk to the PTA concerning guidelines for requests of PTA funds by teachers. Ms. Gannon handles all other teacher requests for funds.
- Old Business
- Ron suggested that each LSC member review available information regarding uniforms and prepare a statement for/against uniforms for the December meeting.
- LSC SIPAAA training will take place on January 10th. LSC Budget training will take place on January 17th.

- Next LSC meeting is December 11, 2007 at 7:00 p.m.
- The meeting was adjourned at 5:40 p.m.
