LSC Minutes - 12/11/07

Sutherland Elementary Local School Council
Meeting Minutes
December 11, 2007
Sutherland Auditorium     

  1. The meeting began at 7:00 p.m.
  2. Roll was taken; present members were: Michael Barnum, Melissa Ciezki, Bill Cunningham, Catherine Gannon, Susan Poole, Donna Somerville, Ron Traylor, and Charlie Zarzecki.
  3. Minutes from the November 13, 2007 meeting were read and approved.
  4. Principal’s Report- Ms. Gannon distributed a report.
    1. Individual meetings with teachers about the students in their classrooms have occurred.  Progress reports will be sent home tomorrow.
    2. New materials have been ordered for teachers in grades K-5 for the improvement of small group, leveled, differentiated instruction in reading and the content areas.
    3. On December 7th administration and teachers met and worked on individual and group projects in curriculum alignment, differentiated instruction and leveled reading.
    4. Formal classroom observations have occurred for all teachers.
    5. SIPAAA- a draft of information to date and materials for planning will be reviewed, explained, and discussed. A budget amendment will be discussed.
    6. We currently have 45 kindergarten applications turned in.  The deadline for full day applications is December 21st.
    7. Kitty Carroll is coordinating the winter tiered award for PAWS and is looking for volunteers.
    8. In January there will be a kick off assembly for PAWS.
    9. We continue to purchase materials for best practices in Literacy.
    10. Families of absent children have been receiving calls if they have not called in first.
    11. Hopefully, Verizon wireless will start work over Christmas break.
    12. Residency is going well.
    13. In January the newsletter is going paperless and will appear on-line only.
    14. The Rosetta Stone subscriptions are being offered again.
    15. IB students sponsored “Pennies for Peace” and collected $780.
    16. We are still collecting cell phones for soldiers and donations for the troops.

  2. Delegate Reports
    1. PPLC (Curriculum)-nothing to report
    2. PTA- On December 7, the PTA met with the teachers to review the guidelines for funding requests.  The school directory will be ready in January.  The book fair was a huge success.  Parents night out will be April 25, 2008.
    3. Building and Grounds-A representative from the Board of Ed came out and surveyed the dead trees on the grounds.  The gutters are being cleaned to prevent overflow.
    4. School Climate-The sports committee will meet to finalize guidelines drafted two years ago. The coaches are given a list of players that are ineligible due to poor grades. The BAC has contacted us regarding a spring play.

    1. Uniforms- the official LSC vote was tabled until January
    2. LSC SIPAAA training will take place on January 10th.  LSC Budget training will take place on January 17th.
