Sutherland Elementary Local School Council
Meeting Minutes
October 23, 2008
Sutherland Auditorium

1. The meeting began at 4:10 p.m.
2. Roll was taken; present members were: Ron Traylor, Bill Cahill, Charlie Zarzecki, Cheryl Kite, Donna Somerville, Catherine Gannon,  Melissa Ciezki, Meg O’Sullivan and Michael Barnum
3. Minutes for the October 7th, 2008 were not read
4. Public comment: none
5. Old Business:
1. Differentiated Instruction was discussed. Some members felt an informational session regarding D.I would educate those parents who still have concerns about this teaching method. Others felt the method should be given time to be implemented and vetted and to do a presentation in a big group may not do the teaching method “justice” because the D.I. may have unique nuances to each grade level. Several members including Ms. Gannon felt D.I. may work better in crowded situations because it is less “limiting” than other methods and that children in small groups learn from each other by “talking it out”
2. Overcrowding in the third grade class was discussed. Some members felt the parents at the October 7th, 2008 were concerned about the overcrowding issue in third grade and just wanted to be heard. These same members wondered if there were other options to fix class room sizes Some discussed options like the 299 grant program. This program however, is mostly available to reconstituted schools with low ISAT scores. The best way to continue to monitor class size is to continue working on fraudulent enrollment.
