Sutherland Local School Council
Special Call Meeting Minutes
January 20, 2009

1. Meeting convenes at 4:00p

  1. Role taken: Members present are Mike Barnum, Bill Cahill, Catherine Gannon, Cheryl Kite, Julia Moran, Meg OSullivan, Ron Traylor, Donna Somerville, Charlie Zarzecki.. Members absent: Cathy Bennett and Melissa Cieski

2. Principal’s Report

  1. Ms. Gannon stated that situation in third grade is improving, supports are in place including aides and additional teacher support. Schedule is constantly being revisited.
  2. Retired tutors are in place.
  3. Petition was presented with concern that third grade environment is not positive for learning. Ms. Gannon stated that the third grade students are progressing and that overcrowding is not a problem. Some noise in third grade classrooms is normal in a differentiated environment as long as students are on task.
  4. Resources are exhausted according to funding. Some grants are being worked on and we have not heard anything as yet.
  5. Board of Ed quota allows one certified teacher per approx 30+ students.
  6. Strategies that work were discussed and we hope to keep continued support from parents.
  7. Ideas were solicited.

 3. Public Comment

  1. Ms. Clark, Gilleylen, and Casey stated that they are always concerned about their students and are capable of handling large class sizes. They stated that they are not overwhelmed and presently they know the kids learning styles better. The students are grouped and they are involved in a job that they all love. They fell that they have plenty of support in the classroom
  2. Staff member Ms. Cira is concerned about atmosphere going through the community and suggests we move the energy to more positive things.
  3. Parents inquired as to how the support staff was being used and Ms. Gannon responded that the schedules are flexible and changed as required in the best interest of students to provide as much support as possible.
  4.  Some parents would like to pursue grants for building and grounds, some individuals expressed interest in starting a foundation for Sutherland and others remain concerned about residency investigations.
