Sutherland School Newsletter - October 2008

International Walk to School Day - October 8
All Sutherland students, parents, teachers and staff are encouraged to walk to school everyday, if possible.
And on Wednesday, October 8th, we will join children and adults all over the world walking to school to promote exercise, socialization, reduction of gas use and emissions, and safety.

Please join us in our walk to Sutherland. We are trying to increase the numbers of students who walk and bike, and have recently won a grant that offers the support of AAA and Clif bars and the International Walk to School Day program www.walktoschool.org, as well as other concerned groups.  Our IB students will collect data, promote the festivities and share the importance of healthy and safe life styles to students.

Parents and guardians who escort your younger children, and especially those who usually drive to school but might walk on October 8th, please stop in the auditorium for refreshments after school starts.

Students are encouraged to wear Sutherland shirts to show their own school spirit and support throughout the neighborhood and in school.

This should be a fun and rewarding event for everyone!

Erase Breast Cancer Day
Unfortunately, we all have been affected by breast cancer.  Too often we become aware of more women and their families who bravely fight this disease.  As we did last year, we are going to promote awareness of breast cancer and help a local hospital provide treatment and support to women, who are our mothers, sisters and friends.

On Friday, October 17, our students will do their part to erase breast cancer in several ways.
We are encouraging all students and staff to wear Pink.
The IB students will sell Pink Pearl erasers for 50 cents.
Parents, teachers and students will plant pink tulips all over our campus.
In our own way, Sutherland is offering hope and support to our own and others during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

High School Fairs
There are several opportunities for parents of 7th and 8th graders to come and learn about the various high school programs available. On October 22nd Kellogg school has graciously invited parents of 7th and 8th graders to attend their high school fair. On October 29th Morgan Park’s IB coordinator will be here to talk about their exemplary program parents of 6th, 7th and 8th graders are invited. On November 5th, we will have several high school representatives here at Sutherland. Parents of 7th and 8th graders are invited.

High School Applications
High School applications are coming home with eligible 8th graders on Monday, October 6, 2008 and Wednesday, October 8, 2008. Everyone should respond to the Morgan Park High School IB Programme. It is an awesome opportunity and there are limited spaces.

Box Tops for Education and Kemps
We are always collecting Box tops for education and Kemps milk caps. This month we will be having a contest to see which class brings in the most. Please remember to send these in throughout the year as we have the potential to earn a great deal of money for simply remembering to cut these out and send them in. Please carefully rinse the milk caps so that they will not smell.

Join the PTA
The best schools have a great deal of involvement by parents and community members. Please be sure to join the PTA. The next PTA meeting will take place on Tuesday, October 7th @ 9:00 a.m.

LSC Meeting
The LSC will meet on Tuesday, October 7th at 4:00 p.m.

Athletic Board Meeting
The Athletic Board Meeting will take place on Tuesday, October 7th @ 5:30 p.m.

Volunteers for Reading Buddies. PAWS program and Parent Patrol
We are currently organizing our volunteer lists. Those of you who volunteered for Reading Buddies will be called and invited to a training in mid-October.

Entertainment Books
We will be having the Entertainment Book fundraiser this year. Proceeds will go to maintain and improve the website. Communication is important and we would like to keep the website updated. There will be a monthly newsletter, calendar and other pertinent information kept on the website for easy access for parents. The entertainment book fundraiser is totally voluntary and will be available for purchase through the school office.

The orders must be turned in by October 15th. If you are interested please fill out a form stating how many books you would like and payment of $20.00 per book. They will also be available at Open House. The books pay for themselves very quickly.

Website
Please continue to check the website. All newsletters, calendars and other pertinent information will be posted on this site.

PAWS Program
Please review the PAWS matrix of school wide behaviors with your child. A form was sent home that explained the program and asked for you to discuss with your child and sign –off that you had received this information. Please return the signed sheets to the school.

Arrival and Dismissal
Students are to arrive to school no earlier than 8:45. There is no one to supervise them before this time. Parents who can walk their children to school are encouraged to do so to keep the traffic to a minimum. Those who do drive are asked to drop their children off next to the curb and then leave the premises. Students are to be picked up at 2:45. No one should enter the parking lot before or after school, as there is a great deal of pedestrian traffic at that time. If your child forgets their lunch please know that we have extra lunches and they will be fed. Lunches can be purchased at the school.

No School on October 24th
On Friday, October 24th students will not be in attendance. There is no school on Friday, October 24th. It is a Professional Development Day.

Absence from School
Thanks to all the parents who have been calling the school to report absences from school. Please notify the school by telephone if your child will be absent from school. You can leave a voice mail at any time. We appreciate your cooperation. Parents should call the school when their child will be absent from school. It is important that we know that the students are safe. It is preferred that the parents call the school by 9:15 so that we know your child is at home with you. You can call and leave a voice mail anytime before 9:15 a.m..

Drivers in and around the school
Please be courteous and cautious when dropping off or picking up students. We need you to respect the traffic patterns and safety patrol crossing areas. Please do not block crosswalks, double-park to drop off or park and wait unnecessarily blocking traffic and creating congestion.

Safety and Security
Visitors (anyone who is not a staff member or student) will not be allowed to be in the building unless they have entered through the office, signed in and received a visitor’s pass. Please do not enter with the children or through any door other than the office door on Hamilton to obtain a pass.
