Sutherland School Newsletter - November 2008International Walk to School Day - Follow Up Cheers to all the teachers, staff, parents and students who walked to school on that dreary October 8th morning. We had over 78% of our students walking that day, up from 48% the week before. The PTA hosted a coffee and sweet table, the sixth grade students carried signs to bring safety awareness to all, Mr. Henderson handed out flyers all week, Ms. Simons connected our walking internationally to other French speaking cities, Ms. Christine Funk took photos, Mrs. Weber, Mrs., Dreznes and Mrs. Powers helped organize activities and were the main cheerleaders, AAA provided our patrol guards with new safety gear, and Clif bars and treats were provided to all of our students. The most obvious result of the day was the decreased car traffic around our campus. How wonderful! And in spite of the drizzle and umbrellas, our Sutherland spirit was apparent throughout the neighborhood. Perhaps we will have another Walk to School Day in the Spring! Check out the www.walktoschool.org website for additional information. Principal for a Day On October 30, we had two Principals for a Day. We had Ms. Andrea Neal, from National City Bank and Mr. Loren DuPree, from Touchcom Inc. They were able to tour and visit classrooms, read stories to children and observe our students demonstrate a variety of activities. Mr. DuPree has been here three years in a row and has become part of the Sutherland community. He has donated all of the cameras for our security system and comes when needed to help us with the equipment. Ms. Neal brought many things for staff and students with her to Sutherland. We look forward to our continued partnerships with these individuals and their companies. ART NEWS “Windows: Looking out, Looking In” As a part of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, our students are given many opportunities to explore culture and participate in activities that provide real world connections to their studies. This year room 008 will participate in a program called ArtLink. Students will develop a work of art inspired by the theme “Windows: Looking out, Looking In.” Artwork will reflect personal ideas and inquiries about culture and the students’ everyday lives. On Tuesday, November 4, students will participate in an in-school workshop to finalize their art pieces. Once completed, work will be shared with our partner classroom in Chengdu, China in Sichuan Province. Room 008 will receive artwork from our partner classroom in January 2009. We look forward to sharing our work with the Sutherland community. Ms. Mastropaulo will post images and selected texts from student reflections in the coming weeks. The entertainment book fundraiser is totally voluntary and will be available for purchase through the school office. If you are interested please fill out a form stating how many books you would like and payment of $20.00 per book. They will also be available at Report Card Pick-up. PAWS Program Please review the PAWS matrix of school wide behaviors with your child. A form was sent home that explained the program and asked for you to discuss with your child and sign –off that you had received this information. Please return the signed sheets to the school. Arrrival and Dismissal Students are to arrive to school no earlier than 8:45. There is no one to supervise them before this time. Parents who can walk their children to school are encouraged to do so to keep the traffic to a minimum. Those who do drive are asked to drop their children off next to the curb and then leave the premises. Students are to be picked up at 2:45. No one should enter the parking lot before or after school, as there is a great deal of pedestrian traffic at that time. If your child forgets their lunch please know that we have extra lunches and they will be fed. Lunches can be purchased at the school. Absence from School Thanks to all the parents who have been calling the school to report absences from school. Please notify the school by telephone if your child will be absent from school. You can leave a voice mail at any time. We appreciate your cooperation. Parents should call the school when their child will be absent from school. It is important that we know that the students are safe. It is preferred that the parents call the school by 9:15 so that we know your child is at home with you. You can call and leave a voice mail anytime before 9:15 a.m. Drivers in and around the school Please be courteous and cautious when dropping off or picking up students. We need you to respect the traffic patterns and safety patrol crossing areas. Please do not block crosswalks, double-park to drop off or park and wait unnecessarily blocking traffic and creating congestion. Safety and Security Visitors (anyone who is not a staff member or student) will not be allowed to be in the building unless they have entered through the office, signed in and received a visitor’s pass. Please do not enter with the children or through any door other than the office door on Hamilton to obtain a pass. Calendar
