Newsletter September 2009Welcome Back What a great opening of school. It is so good to see the students again. We are off to a great start and looking forward to another successful year at Sutherland. Important Items Went Home on Friday ISAT Test scores for students grade 4-8 went home on Friday. Please return the emergency cards, school fees, cultural enhancement performance fees and other items to school as soon as possible. It is imperative that we have those emergency cards updated for our office file. School Fees are due on September 25th. Payment of fees is required prior to participating in any extra curricular activities. Your appreciation is greatly appreciated. Curriculum Nights Curriculum Nights will take place the next two Thursday evenings. On Thursday, September 18th parents of students in grades 6, 7 & 8 will be invited to attend curriculum night. We will have a mandatory meeting for 8th grade parents on the same night @ 6:00 p.m. Curriculum presentations for grades 7 & 8 begin @ 6:35. An introduction to MYP for 6th grade parents will begin @ 6:30 p.m. Sixth grade curriculum presentations will begin @ 7:15 Curriculum Night for grades K-5 will take place on Thursday, September 24th. Curriculum presentations for grades K-2 are @ 6:30 until 7:15 and for grades 3-5 @ 7:15 until 8:00. Peace Pole Dedication We will be having our annual Peace Pole dedication on Monday, September 21st @ 9:30 a.m. Monday, September 21st is International Day of Peace. You are invited to attend if you would like to attend then please meet us on Leavitt at the Peace Garden at 9:30. Attendance/Homework As always we need for you to call in your child when they are ill. Please call in the morning by 9:15. You can leave a voice mail message at any time press 1 for attendance and leave your message. Homework is not automatically assigned if your child misses one day then they can get the assignments the next day when they return. If they miss will miss more than one day due to illness you can call on the second day early in the day before 9:15 and ask that assignments be gathered. Illness/H1N1 You received a letter with details about H1N1 this letter was sent in the first day packet and contains detailed information. Current mandates require that a child who has a fever be free from fever without being on medication (e.g. aspirin, tylenol or motrin) for 24 hours. Please follow these guidelines closely. Please keep your child home if they are sick and particularly if they have a fever even if the fever goes down when they are on medication. It is important that we follow these guidelines and that you help by being available to pick up your child when they are ill and keep them home when they get sick. Please work with us to keep our children as healthy as possible. Thank you to those of you who sent disinfectant wipes to school. We will let you know when we need more. 1 package per child suffices for now. In- School Field Trips The students will once again be exposed to a variety of performances through the in-school field trips. We have planned ten performances for this year. We will need to collect $2.00 per performance per child. That is a total of $20.00 per year. We prefer that you pay for all of the performances by September 18th. In order for your child to attend the September 22nd performance the first one must be paid for by September 18th. We thank you for your support and are looking forward to the performances. No Dogs at School Please Please do not bring dogs to school when dropping off or picking up your children. Many of the students will want to pet the dogs and we do not know who might be allergic. Some may be afraid of dogs and feel unsafe. Also the dogs could become overwhelmed and snap or bite one of the children. It is not safe to have dogs around when there are so many students leaving or entering the building. Please do not bring them to the school. LSC Meeting The next regular scheduled LSC meeting will take place on at Tuesday, September 15th 4:00 p.m. Athletic Board Meeting The Sutherland Athletic board will meet on Tuesday, September 15th @ 5:30 p.m. Join the PTA The best schools have a great deal of involvement by parents and community members. Please be sure to join the PTA. The next PTA meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 15th @ 7:00 p.m. Coaches Needed for Girls Volleyball We will be needing coaches for girls volleyball for grades 4 and 6. If interested fill out an application and call and leave a message for Mrs. Cody. Registration for girls volleyball will take place in early October details will be posted in the weekly bulletin on the website. Traffic around the School The number of cars and the unsafe practices being demonstrated around the school are creating problems that are hazardous for our children. We need for parents to consider others and keep the flow of traffic moving. Individuals who park and watch their children stand in line create unnecessary conditions. People who talk on the cell phone while driving and are not paying attention to the adults directing traffic are adding to the problem creating further delays and back-ups. If you want to watch your child until they go in the building park at least on the next block and walk with them. Turning on 100th from Leavitt rather than going to 99th may be more convenient but creates further delay. We know that everyone agrees the safety of children is the most important thing to consider. We encourage you to consider walking or parking away from the perimeter of the school. We absolutely need parents to follow the rules and simply drop off their child and leave the premises safely. We have contacted the police department and they will be assisting us. Tickets will be issued to individuals who continue to follow unsafe practices. We would also appreciate volunteers who would help us manage the traffic and ensure the students are safe. A special thank you is extended to the two parents who volunteer daily. We sincerely appreciate your willingness to assist for the benefit of our students. If you would like to volunteer for Parent Patrol even a day or two per week please call the office and leave your name and contact information. Website All newsletters, calendars and other pertinent information will be posted on this site. PAWS Program Please review the PAWS matrix of school wide behaviors with your child. Arrival and Dismissal Students are to arrive to school no earlier than 8:45. There is no one to supervise them before this time. Parents who can walk their children to school are encouraged to do so to keep the traffic to a minimum. Those who do drive are asked to drop their children off next to the curb and then leave the premises. Students are to be picked up at 2:45. No one should enter the parking lot before or after school, as there is a great deal of pedestrian traffic at that time. If your child forgets their lunch please know that we have extra lunches and they will be fed. Lunches can be purchased at the school. Absence from School Thanks to all the parents who have been calling the school to report absences from school. Please notify the school by telephone if your child will be absent from school. You can leave a voice mail at any time. We appreciate your cooperation. Parents should call the school when their child will be absent from school. It is important that we know that the students are safe. It is preferred that the parents call the school by 9:15 so that we know your child is at home with you. You can call and leave a voice mail anytime before 9:15 a.m. Drivers in and around the school Please be courteous and cautious when dropping off or picking up students. We need you to respect the traffic patterns and safety patrol crossing areas. Please do not block crosswalks, double-park to drop off or park and wait unnecessarily blocking traffic and creating congestion. Safety and Security Visitors (anyone who is not a staff member or student) will not be allowed to be in the building unless they have entered through the office, signed in and received a visitor’s pass. Please do not enter with the children or through any door other than the office door on Hamilton to obtain a pass.
