Newsletter December 2011

MAP/NWEA Testing

MAP testing will begin on December 5th and continue until completed. This mid year session gives us feedback on how students are doing overall and will give us ideas about their strengths etc. Please encourage your children to do their best.

Cultural Enhancement Program

Our third presentation will take place on Tuesday, December 13th. Students are invited and the cost per performance is $2.00 per performance or $10.00 for the remainder of the year. It is our preference that people pay for all performances at once. Thank you to those who already have done so.

Winter Carnival

We will have our annual winter carnival and rewards activities this year on Dec 22nd for grades K-5 and Dec. 23rd for grades 6-8. We are in need of parent volunteers for the carnival. Please call the office and leave your name if you can volunteer for half of a day on Thursday or an hour or so on Friday morning.

SAVE the DATE

This year our IB programme and school community will be organizing and hosting a Feed Your Starving Children packing event. We will need 500 volunteers and contributions to our event. Mrs. D. Griffin has taken on the project and will be working with school administrators and IB staff to coordinate the event. WE want to make this fabulous so please stay tuned for more information and please SAVE the DATE and plan to attend. The event will take place on Saturday, March 24, 2012.

LSC Meeting

The next regularly scheduled LSC meeting will take place on Tuesday, December 13th @ 4:30 p.m. December’s LSC meeting will include a presentation on School Progress Report (School Data) presentation.

Winter Break

We would like to wish everyone a joyous holiday season and wonderful winter break. This year winter break will take place from December 24th through January 9th. Please remind students to read and practice on the many websites the school provides such as LEAD 21 K-5, RAZ kids, K-2, MAP practice websites K-8 and Study Island 3-8. We do want them to enjoy the holidays but we also want them to keep up on their skills. These programs are enjoyable and do help the students practice their skills.

Join the PTA

The best schools have a great deal of involvement by parents and community members. Please be sure to join the PTA. The next PTA meeting takes place on Tuesday, December 13th @ 9:00 a.m.

Please Do Not Bring Dogs to School at Arrival and Dismissal Times

Please do not bring dogs to school at entrance or dismissal times. There are more than 750 students being dismissed some who have been bitten in the past, some who are afraid and others who are allergic. The students often run and make noise and cannot resist petting the dogs. We are very concerned that a dog would get overwhelmed and a child might be hurt. We are reminding you of the policy and appreciate your assistance with implementing it. We love dogs and agree most would be fine with the situation but do not want to take the risk of having an incident here at school. We are concerned for the safety and well being of the children.

Change in Policy and Procedures

Please do not bring edible birthday treats to school. The Board of Education has adopted a food allergy management policy. As a result students are no longer allowed to bring edible treats to school for their classmates. We suggest celebrating your child's special day by donating a book for the classroom library or sending stickers, pencils or other non-edible items to pass to their classmates.

Parent Portal

Parent Portal will be used for grade 3-8 this year. Parent Portal pin numbers will be distributed to parents of third and fourth graders at curriculum nights. The numbers used in previous years have not changed.

Selective Enrollment Applications

Applications for selective enrollment high schools are currently available at the cps website. Please visit www.apply.cps for details. . All students were given a form with instructions for Morgan Park’s IB MYP program. They are to return this form to Mrs. Ryan with a parent/guardian signature to verify that you have received this form.  Students will only be selected for IB or any of the high schools if they complete the on-line applications.

Study Island, RAZ Kids, MAP practice and LEAD 21 websites.

Students are always encouraged to practice on Study Island and MAP practice websites available from links on the school’s website. We also have RAZ kids and new LEAD 21 websites for students in grades K-5 that will be available all summer. These programs are always accessible please encourage your child to practice on them frequently.

Reminder about Coming Back to School for Forgotten Items

Students are not allowed to return to the buildings for forgotten items after school has dismissed. It is not safe for students to be in the building unescorted and there is no one here for that purpose after hours.

Upgrades on CPS website

CPS is planning to do regular updates of their website on Thursday nights. It may not be possible to access their website and parent portal on Thursday evenings.

Attendance/Homework

As always we need for you to call in your child when they are ill. Please call in the morning by 9:15. You can leave a voice mail message at any time press 1 for attendance and leave your message. Homework is not automatically assigned if your child misses one day then they can get the assignments the next day when they return. If they miss will miss more than one day due to illness you can call on the second day early in the day before 9:15 and ask that assignments be gathered.

Safety and Security

Apparently there have been incidents in CPS schools that have occurred when students were unsupervised. It has been an issue at several schools for both alleged and actual occurrences therefore students are not allowed to go back in the building for forgotten belongings etc once dismissed. We have been asked to follow these procedures and we will be doing so. Students are not allowed to return to the buildings for forgotten items after school has dismissed.
Visitors during the school day (anyone who is not a staff member or student) will not be allowed to be in the building unless they have entered through the office, signed in and received a visitor’s pass. Please do not enter with the children or through any door other than the office door on Hamilton to obtain a pass.

Arrival and Dismissal

Students are to arrive to school no earlier than 8:45. There is no one to supervise them before this time. Parents who can walk their children to school are encouraged to do so to keep the traffic to a minimum. Those who do drive are asked to drop their children off next to the curb or even a bit further away and then leave the premises. Students are to be picked up at 2:45. No one should enter the parking lot before or after school, as there is a great deal of pedestrian traffic at that time. If your child forgets their lunch please know that we have extra lunches and they will be fed. Lunches can be purchased at the school.

Website

All newsletters, calendars and other pertinent information will be posted on this site. Violin and Band information is available on the website as well.

PAWS Program

Please review the PAWS matrix of school wide behaviors with your child.

Traffic around the School

The number of cars and the unsafe practices being demonstrated around the school are creating problems that are hazardous for our children. We need for parents to consider others and keep the flow of traffic moving. Individuals who park and watch their children stand in line create unnecessary conditions. People who talk on the cell phone while driving and are not paying attention to the adults directing traffic are adding to the problem creating further delays and back-ups. If you want to watch your child until they go in the building park at least on the next block and walk with them. Turning on 100th from Leavitt rather than going to 99th may be more convenient but creates further delay. We know that everyone agrees the safety of children is the most important thing to consider. We encourage you to consider walking or parking away from the perimeter of the school. We absolutely need parents to follow the rules and simply drop off their child and leave the premises safely. . Please do not block crosswalks, double-park to drop off or park and wait unnecessarily blocking traffic and creating congestion. Please be courteous and cautious when dropping off or picking up students. We need you to respect the traffic patterns and safety patrol crossing areas.

We have contacted the police department and they will be assisting us. Tickets will be issued to individuals who continue to follow unsafe practices. We would also appreciate volunteers who would help us manage the traffic and ensure the students are safe. We sincerely appreciate your willingness to assist for the benefit of our students. If you would like to volunteer for Parent Patrol even a day or two per week please call the office and leave your name and contact information or fill out the Parent Volunteer form that was sent home.
