NWA/MAP Tests

October 13, 2010

Dear Parents of Second through Eighth Graders,

Today you will be receiving your child’s MAP test scores and Student Goal Setting worksheet. MAP stands for Measures of Academic Progress. Each area has a band which is referred to as a RIT band. RIT means Ready for Instruction Today. It is the range in which your child should practice in order to continue to grow.  We will be working on the skills in the various areas in order to move students gradually up the RIT bands. We will be giving this test three times this year and hope to have students meet their targets as indicated on their goal setting worksheets. The test sets individual targets for individual students. It is different in the fact that it emphasizes a growth target for each child rather than a specific range for all.

We have also posted links on our school website to websites that your child can use to practice within their RIT band by area. Practicing in their RIT bands will help them to move on to the next.  The goal is to achieve their target. By achieving their target they will continue to move incrementally up the RIT ladder. We have also posted strategies for parents and are sending home a flyer that tells you about the MAP test.

The goal setting worksheet also indicates their lexile level. Books within the lexile are considered to be at their instructional level. Those 150 below would be also acceptable for pleasure reading.  The website www.lexile.com will help you find titles within lexile ranges and also has filters to use for searches that are both age appropriate and interest related to help you select books for your child to read.

The best way for you to support your child is to have them practice within their RIT band on the websites listed and also to help support them by making sure they do school work they bring home daily and of course to read often and practice on Study Island. Links to these websites are available on the school website.

Sincerely,

Sutherland School Faculty
