PAWS Program

graphicThis year we will be continuing with our PAWS program. PAWS stand for Positive Attitudes Work at Sutherland. The goal is to create a social-culture at Sutherland that will encourage positive behaviors and interactions, while discouraging problematic behavior. The social culture will lead to a safe environment that is conducive to academic achievement and help students build positive relationships with peers and adults. Last years referrals were significantly less than the prior year. The foundation of the program approach emphasizes teaching the students the behaviors we expect to see, reminding them to use these behaviors, acknowledging them when they do and correcting them when they do not.

We will use the PAWS matrix with three school wide expectations for all students, staff and settings. They are, “Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe”. We have attached copies of the matrix for your attention and information. Please read over these materials and after discussing them with your child, please sign the letter and return it to Sutherland School. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us to create a positive school climate. Please use the matrix to review and reinforce positive behavioral goals and expectations; ask students before they leave for school what the behavioral expectations are; acknowledge and celebrate your child when they receive Sutherland Bulldog PAWS Rewards.

Bulldog PAWS are earned throughout the school year. They will be turned in for a monthly raffle for prizes. We have many toys and games for prizes. We also have special rewards like lunch with the principal or free gym or computer time. Students choose their prizes. When the entire school meets their monthly challenge of having less than a predetermined number of detentions and office referrals we have special school wide rewards such as crazy hair and hat day, sports team day, twins day, pajama day, pizza day  and a variety of other school wide rewards. Sometimes we have special classroom raffles in which whole classrooms that do not have any referrals or detentions go into a special raffle for special classroom reward. We also have some tiered rewards at winter break, spring break and the end of the year. Tiered rewards are based on a set number of PAWS per activity. Students are then allowed to participate in activities based on the numbers of PAWS they have. Those who have extra tickets can put them into a special raffle. Individual classrooms also have rewards based on the number of PAWS students earn and they may have a raffle or a class reward.

Last year, we had some special days such as Field Day, a Winter Carnival, a winter Dance and an End of Year Carnival. We often need volunteers for these events. This year we hope to continue with the program and have some new rewards. We also intend to build the program to have targeted assistance for students who may need it and increase the challenge so that office referrals and detentions decline through the year.

If you are interested in volunteering for special PAWS events, fill out a volunteer form or call the school when the voice blast or newsletter announces the need for volunteers. Also if you have donations of gift certificates or new toys or games that you would like to donate please send these new items or gift certificates to the office. Thanks to those of you who already have.

In September, the students did meet their goal and had the raffle and Crazy Hair and Hat Day. We expect that they will continue to be respectful, responsible and safe and continue to earn PAWS. PAWS are collected on the last day of the month. School wide reward days generally occur on the next Friday. Reward Day activities are announced at school.

Thank you very much for your support.
