PTA Committees, Events and Programs
WHAT DOES THE PTA DO?
The following is a list of Sutherland’s PTA committees, events and programs:
1. Box Tops for Education: A container is located outside the school office where we collect “Box Tops for Education” and Kemps milk caps. General Mills labels earn us cash.
2. Opening Day coffee: After you drop off your child(ren) for the first day of school, join us in the auditorium for information, conversation and refreshments.
3. Book Fair: Once a year the PTA offers parents, students, and teachers the opportunity to purchase books and academic items at a Scholastic Book Fair. This important fundraiser provides teachers with free books and classroom enhancement items.
4. Buildings and Grounds: Our beautiful landscaping is maintained by this committee. A few times a year, they look for help planting and weeding our campus.
5. Directory: The PTA sponsors a voluntary student directory for easy play date planning.
6. Father/Daughter Dance: A Father/Daughter Dance is held in the second half of the school year.
7. Grandparents’ Day: An event that honors the special people in a kindergartner’s life.
8. Holiday Gift Shop: During the holidays, students can purchase gifts through the Holiday Gift Shop. Parent volunteers help children choose low cost items for friends and family.
9. Hospitality: Volunteers help organize refreshments for meetings and events.
10. I Madonnari: An Italian Street Painting Festival will be held September 20, 2008. Fun for the whole family, it includes street artists, hand-crafted items for sale, and refreshments.
11. Innisbrook Gift Wrap and Gift Sale: Our most important and lucrative fundraiser, parents are encouraged to help children sell high quality wrapping paper and gifts.
12. Juvenile Protection: Parent volunteers help to supervise the Student Crossing Guards in the mornings and afternoons, as well as Halloween night patrol.
13. Parents’ Night Out: This parents only party and silent auction is just one of the social events that make it fun to be a Sutherland parent! This important fundraiser takes place in spring and helps fund special school improvements.
14. PTA Membership Drive: Membership in this national, regional and local organization helps to fund many of the important events at Sutherland. Every parent is encouraged to join.
15. Mother/Son Event: A special night out for moms and boys will be held during the school year.
16. Parent Education: Guest speakers are provided at a few of the evening PTA meetings, or on special parent education nights.
17. Room Representatives: The PTA enlists the help of parents for field trips, class parties and special classroom projects.
18. Teacher Appreciation: Sutherland parents show their appreciation for our teachers with gifts, special breakfasts, and lunches.
19. Volunteer Coordination: the PTA solicits volunteers for all their committees, programs and events.
20. Website: Our website is www.sutherland.cps.k12.il.us. We hope to improve communication by keeping it updated with information on events, classroom news, sports, the PTA, and the LSC.
21. Weekly Newsletter: The Newsletter keeps you informed about upcoming school and community happenings. Look for it in your child’s backpack on Thursday afternoons. If you have school or community information that you would like to distribute through our weekly newsletter, place it in the newsletter envelope in the office by Tuesday at 2:30. Volunteers are needed Thursday mornings for 1 hour to help assemble this publication.
22. Market Day: Fundraising never tasted so good! Look for order forms to come home monthly. Send your orders back by the due date. Orders must be picked up and paid for at the school the first Thursday of the month. Volunteers are needed to help on pick-up days.
