Special Report:
International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program: Ms. Pamela Civik reported on recent and upcoming events of the 6th, 7th and 8th grades:

Students were so moved by their experience of life as a refugee in model camp set up on the lakefront by Doctors Without Borders, that they’ll be sponsoring a drive to raise funds for nutrition packets desperately needed by malnourished children. In separate trip, students toured the “Cool Globes” exhibit on the lakefront, giving them a deeper understanding of the impact of global warming on our environment.  In both instances, exhibit organizers commended Sutherland students for their intellectual curiosity and respectful behavior.

The Erase Breast Cancer event will occur on Friday, October 12 between 10 a.m. and noon.  Students, teachers, parents and any other volunteers are welcome to plant pink tulip bulbs on the Sutherland grounds to commemorate all those in the community touched by this disease.

The UNICEF Trick or Treat fundraiser will kick-off October 23rd.  As one of the top fundraising schools, Sutherland School is highly valued by UNICEF.

LSC Report:
Recycling: Students approached the LSC about expanding the recycling program at Sutherland to include waste other than paper; the students will research the issue further and report findings to the LSC.

Uniforms for Students:  the LSC is exploring the issue

Buildings and Grounds:  the LSC is looking into improving the landscaping, repairing the roofs and broken playground equipment.

Officers Report:
Free Sauve products were distributed to all PTA meeting attendees.

November meeting will include a presentation on getting organized, incorporating the Sutherland virtues of self-discipline and responsibility.

PTA membership totals around 201.  This is less than half the number of members at Clissold.  Please join us and spread the word!  Contact Dawn Craan for any information.

Committee Reports:
I Madonnari:  A smashing success.  Over 300 artists participated, with plenty of vendors, music, food and sunshine to make the event memorable and profitable,  earning over $2200 in profits.  Remaining tee shirts will be sold at parent teacher conferences.

School Directory:  The committee is requesting that all families submit contact information for purposes of compiling a master list.  The info will not be included in the directory if the family does not want it to be included.

Parents Night Out:  Planning for a night of fun for all Sutherland parents is underway with the announcement of a new venue:  The Beverly Art Center.  The date will be set soon.

Library:  Fundraising for new books is underway.

Fundraising: Look for a new fundraising event next month:  Anytime Treats: Be a Fifteen Minute Gourmet.  Delicious samples of dips were on hand at this meeting.  Be sure to attend next month’s meeting to sample tasty breakfast treats!
