PTA Minutes September 15, 2009

Meeting called to order at 7:00 pm.

A motion to approve June’s minutes was moved, seconded and approved.

Guest Speaker:  Mrs. Ryan and Mrs. Civik presented on the IB Program, including details on the history, philosophy and highlighted results.  Sutherland administers the middle years program automatically to all 6-8 grade students and feeds into the IB Program at Morgan Park High School.  The program was started in the 1960’s for diplomats to enable consistent educational requirements worldwide as the children of the diplomats traveled around.  The program is administered in 138 countries with over 750k students participating.  Sutherland applies the IB philosophy of education - Global Intelligence, Connecting classroom to real life and Holistic learning while using the standard CPS curriculum. Laurie Cleary, an online retailer and Sutherland parent was also on-site with a display containing many of the environmentally friendly lunchbox and storage items that are available at www.lunchville.com. 

Treasurer's Report:

The audit for 2008/2009 was performed and all is fine.  The budget for 2009/2010 was set and the motion to accept was moved, seconded and approved.  A note of thanks was given for the generous donation from the Beverly/Ridge Homeowners Association.  Also, Sutherland families were reminded to register with www.escrip.com for an easy way for the school to receive rebates.

Corresponding Scretary’s Report:   Thank you received from teachers for breakfast treats provided by the PTA on first day of school.

Principal's Report:

• Reminder to all families to promptly return the Contact Cards and any other information sent home in the first day packet.
• Curriculum nights scheduled for Thursday, 9/17 or 9/24 based on respective grades.
• Peace pole ceremony set for Monday, 9/21 at 9:30 a.m. 
• Newsletter will be posted on the Sutherland website the first Friday of each month.
• The in-school arts enrichment, Urban Gateway Program is back again this year.  It is recommended that families pay for the programs all at once, if possible.

Teacher’s Report:

• Teachers are promoting all things green this year;  there is a push to reduce paper and waste.

Committee Reports:

• I Madonnari to be held Saturday, 9/19
• Spirit wear orders are due by Monday, 9/26
• Innsbrook fundraiser catalogs will be sent home on Thursday, 9/17 and runs until Friday, 10/2.  NOTE: all orders to be submitted on-line no later than Friday, 10/2.  Refer to catalog for details.
• Mother/Son Homecoming Party is scheduled for Friday, 10/16 at the school.  A magician, balloon artist and other fun events are planned.  Volunteers needed.
• Mens Club is working on compiling e-mail addresses for all members as this will be the primary form of communication.

New Business:

• Lucy Gaillard was nominated to fill the open co-Corresponding Secretary position.
• A chairperson is needed to oversee the Kids Kreation fundraiser scheduled for spring 2010.

The next PTA meeting will be Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at 9 am.
