PTA Minutes November 9, 2010
Meeting called to order at 7:02 p.m.
A motion to approve October’s minutes was moved, seconded, and approved.
Treasurer’s Report
The October 2010 treasurer’s report was approved.
Recording Secretaries’ Report
Ms. Boyd requested $389.87 for Bill Nye science videos. She is going to research to possibly find a better deal for the videos.
Principal’s Report
-On October 22nd, Bill Cunningham participated as the Principal for a Day.
-Sutherland was awarded $6.7 million in capital improvements, which will include waterproofing the school; tuck pointing around windows; boiler/roof work; work on 2nd floor ceilings. The work will start in April. Sept. 1 is estimated completion date. Extra parent patrol volunteers will be needed during this time.
-The after school program is going well. The school received a grant to run various “mini clubs” for Grades 3-8.
-The principal is expecting feedback from the IB organization in February. Based on its 10/29 visit, it was impressed with Sutherland’s world language program.
-There will be a choir/violin concert on 12/15. Band concert is scheduled for February.
-Information on Rosetta Stone group subscription rate will be coming home soon.
Teacher’s Report
-Mrs. Civik thanked the PTA and parent volunteers who helped with the Walk-to-School day. 85% of children walked to school that day.
-The tulips that were funded by the PTA were planted during Breast Cancer Awareness week. Students also sold $650 worth of pink erasers. Profits went to Little Company of Mary’s Breast Cancer Unit.
-Children collected almost $1,000 for Unicef this year.
LSC Report
Parent surveys came home and are due by Report Card Pick-Up.
Committee Report
Beverly Wine and Cheese Fundraiser
-The event was a huge success. Well over 700 people attended. A post-event meeting will take place to review feedback. Feedback can be sent to the event’s Facebook page.
Book Fair
-The book fair will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 16th – Thursday, Nov. 18th.
-Students will attend the fair with their classes on Tuesday and Thursday, and parents are invited to come during report card pick-up on Wednesday, Nov. 17th.
-Parents are encouraged to take advantage of the “Teacher’s Wish List” table and donate a book for their child’s classroom.
Holiday Gift Shop
-Merchandise will be delivered on Monday, 12/6. Students will shop 12/7-12/9. Looking for parent volunteers.
Market Day
-Students sold 52 pies during “pie month.” Sutherland received 20% of this profit. Sales for the month were up. Parents can also support Sutherland by shopping at Sara Lee on 95th Street and giving Sutherland’s name.
Mother/Son Event
Preliminary plans include looking into a Wolves hockey game sometime at the end of March.
Stew Crew
Katie Murphy is the new chairperson for this committee. It’s an opportunity for 6th-8th graders to earn service hours by volunteering at school or throughout the community. Ms. Murphy is looking for parent volunteers from 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Some upcoming opportunities include filling bags for participants in the Turkey Trot; collecting shoes for Share Our Soles; helping the PTA set up for dances; etc.
Men’s Club
The Men’s Club has reserved 50 tickets for the disco cover band, Afrodisiacs. More info to come.
New Business
-The PTA Bylaws have expired. The Board is working on the Bylaws, will submit them to the IL PTA. Once approved, the PTA will submit it to the membership at next month’s meeting.
-French Club: Looking for volunteers for the Wax Museum, scheduled for the beginning of May. 7th and 8th graders will be wrapping gifts at Borders; gratuities will go toward the event. Bakers Square gift cards are also available through Christmas.
Presenter
-Reminder: Pampered Chef fundraiser deadline is November 24th. 25% of sales will go toward Sutherland.
-Karen Lux, Pampered Chef consultant, demonstrated an array of Pampered Chef kitchen tools and provided delicious samples of appetizers, including cream cheese/kalamata olives Bruschetta and a pomegranate and ginger cooler.
Reminders
Innisbrook pick up is Wednesday, November 17th.
The next PTA meeting will be Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. Parents are encouraged to bring cookies to the next meeting and help package them for teachers.
