PTA Minutes April 12, 2011

Meeting called to order at 9:08am

A motion to approve February minutes was moved, seconded, and approved.

Sue Stevenson proposed that we hold a clothing swap sometime during the next school year.

Treasurer's Report
It was a quiet March and the treasurer had nothing to report.

Corresponding Secretaries' Report
Some Sutherland students sent the PTA thanks you notes for the book fair and for the pizza lunch.

Recording Secretary's Report
There were no classroom enhancement requests made during the month of March.
The book fair was a great success. The PTA should be able to buy 6-8 new bookcases for classrooms with the profits raised from the sale.

Principal's Report
Earth week is off to a great start. Thank you to the Earth Week Committee for all the hard work.
Sutherland School has been getting a lot of good press in the local newspapers lately.
The last round of MAP testing will be taking place in May. Please remind your children to keep on studying.
The drama club, choir and violin students are all having performances coming up in May.
Science week will also be held in May.
The school has three more cultural events scheduled.
The cookie dough fundraiser was quite successful. Cookie dough will be delivered on May 5th.
Spring Break is coming up. We hope that all the students and their families have a fun break.
Wednesday June 15th will be a school day as we have one more snow day to make up.

LSC Report
There will be a LSC meeting tonight and the ongoing principal evaluation will be discussed.

Sutherland Foundation Report
The foundation's website is now up and running. The web address is: sutherlandfoundation.org. Donations can be made on the website via Paypal.
The fundraiser at Francesca's on 95th brought in $300 for the school.
A social event for alumni will be held in June.

Committee Reports

Earth Week
Over 100 Earth Day t-shirts were sold to students.  The shirts will be sent home today with the students.

Our sponsors generously covered the cost of the speakers. Classes will be learning about healthy eating, butterflies and worm composting.

There will be a waste -free lunch competion held during Earth Week. The classroom which produces the least amount of garbage during lunch will win a prize.

A Goodwill drive will be held during Earth Week. You can drop of donations for Goodwill in labeled plastic bags on Thursday and Friday morning.

Mrs. Civik's class will be running a UNICEF fundraiser for the people of Japan this week.

Friday is Walk to School day. Please encourage all students to walk to school.

A bake sale will be held Friday morning out in front of the school.

Sutherland School will also be implementing a new recycling program.

Science Week
Science Week will be held May 9-13th. The theme of the week will be "Let's Build Something".

The 6th grade students will participate in a robotics lab.

Grades K-5 will be treated to the Mouse trap Machine show.

The committee will be meeting with Mrs. Boyd to discuss a building competion to be held in the 7th and 8th grades.

Family Lego night will be held on May 12th. Please bring your own Legos.

Teacher Appreciation Week
Teacher Appreciation Week will be held in May this year. Volunteers are needed.

New Business

A nominating committee was formed to nominate 2011/12 PTA officers. We have four open positions to fill.

The PTA is looking to fill one position on the Athletic Board. This position will involve treasury work.

Guest Speaker

The Guest speaker this month was Kate Bradley, Master Gardener. She gave a very informative presentation about composting with worms.

Reminders
The next PTA meeting will be Tuesday, May 10th at 7pm.
