PTA Minutes May 10, 2011
Meeting called to order at 7:05 p.m.
A note was made to amend April’s PTA notes to show that Teacher Appreciation Week will be in June instead of May. A motion to approve April’s minutes as amended was moved, seconded, and approved.
Treasurer’s Report
The April 2011 treasurer’s report was approved.
Corresponding Secretaries’ Report
The PTA received thank you notes from students for the books that the PTA purchased for their classrooms as well as from Mrs. Meyer.
Recording Secretaries’ Report
Mrs. O’Connor requested $289 to renew a subscription for a classroom civics game and $60 for art supplies for a medieval project; the fourth grade teachers requested $200 for the Lyric Opera performances. Both requests will be processed.
Principal’s Report
The capital improvement project will begin on May 15 outside, in the parking lot. Parents are reminded not to use the parking lot. The work should be complete by September 1, 2011. The bulk of the work will be done over the summer.
Upcoming cultural events: Spring choir concert on 5/18; Violin/band concert on 5/19; Drama production on 6/2.
Thanks to the PTA for its support of the Wax Museum. It was an outstanding event.
Thanks to the PTA for its support of the K-5 Mouse Trap Machine Show.
Committee Reports
Science Week
Science Week has begun. Some highlights include a K-5 Mousetrap Machine Show, a robotics lab for G6, a bridge-building demonstration for upper grades. Lego Night is May 12th. 23 families (48 children) have registered.
Teacher Appreciation Week
Volunteers are going into classrooms during the teachers’ lunch and having students write down their favorite memory of their teacher for the year; the pages will be assembled into a booklet for the teachers; teachers will enjoy a spa day the first week of June and a breakfast on 6/16.
Grandparent and Special Friend Week
On June 8, Kindergarteners will perform songs based on the theme, “Oceans of Love.”
Volunteer Appreciation Dinner
To be held Monday, June 6. Venue TBD.
Unfinished Business
The nominating committee presented nominees for the 2011/2012 PTA Officers:
Bill Cader, 2nd Vice President; Tammy Dargan, Teasurer; Jennifer Walton, Recording Secretary; Debra Greenlee, Corresponding Secretary
Guest Speaker:
Alicia Stepanek spoke about opportunities and events available through Olivia’s Garden, such as a kids’ club, which features gardening seminars for kids; a tomato give-away on 5/17; and a composting seminar on 5/21. Olivia’s Garden was proud to help support Sutherland’s Earth Week activities.
