PTA Minutes February 14, 2012

Meeting called to order at 9:05am.

A motion to approve December's minutes was moved, seconded and approved.

Treasurer's Report
The box top committee reported that they collected $1049.40 from the box tops that were handed in last year.
The budget for the PTA is currently under its projected income but also under its projected expenditures.

Teacher's Report
Students need to start preparing for the upcoming ISATs. Please be sure to have your children log on to the following websites: NWEA, Study Island and MAP.

Committee Reports

Boxtops/Kemps
     We collected a little over $600 in boxtops this year. We will continue to collect boxtops throughout the month of May. Please trim and count the boxtops before you send them to school. 2,040 Kemps milk tops were collected this year which means the school collects $100.

Mardi Gras Potluck Dinner
The annual potluck dinner will be held on Feb. 21st. Our French students will be performing and the Early Bird Drawing for the Grand Prix will be held.

Mother/Son Hockey Game
The annual mother/son event will be held on March 24th at All State Arena. A flyer will be sent home with students with more information. After the Wolves game there will be a free skate for those who wish to participate.

Family Fitness Night
Family Fitness Night will be held on March 28th. This event will be for students in grades 4-6 and their families.
The committee is looking for ideas and for help with the event planning.

Mother/Daughter Tea
Save the date! The Mother/Daughter Tea will be held on April 14th at Smith Village.

New Business

EXPLORE Test
March 19-20 the eighth graders will be taking the EXPLORE Test. It is a very difficult test that that is based on the ACT model. The children will be retaking this test in ninth grade and then again in eleventh grade when they take the actual ACT. This test helps kids think about their future and to help them plan what high school level classes that they should be taking to prep for college. It also helps to assess whether they are on track academically to meet the expectations for college acceptance. For information and prep tools, visit www.actstudent.org/explore

Le Musee do Louvre at Le Jardin des Tuileries
The Sutherland Parents' French Club has launched a fundraising campaign to bring a state-of-the-art language lab to Sutherland School. Their goal is to raise $100,000 by 2012. Please support their efforts and buy a Grand Prix Loterie raffle ticket today!
   
Longer School Day Report
A group of Sutherland parents have created an online petition stating their concerns about the proposed 7.5 hour school day. These parents are part of a larger movement, the 19th Ward Parents, who seek to limit the longer day to 6.5 hours. Please read the petition and consider signing it at

Save our Children
The date of the Save our Children project is March 24th. They are looking for 500 volunteers ages 5 and up to meet at the Ag School to pack 100,000 meals for the needy. There is a link on the Sutherland website if you are interested in signing up.

Marianne Bending Memorial Garden
An update was given on the efforts to create a garden in memory of Sutherland's beloved longtime Kindergarten and first grade teacher, Ms. Bending. A dedication is tentatively planned for May 18. If you would like to donate to this cause, please send a payment to Ms. Ford in the office Make checks payable to Sutherland School.

Reminders
LSC meeting is today Feb. 14th at 4:30pm. The next PTA meeting is scheduled for March 13th at 7pm.

Karen Lux, Pampered Chef consultant gave a presentation about preparing and serving fun and healthy valentine treats for the kids.
