The Stew CrewWhat is Stew Crew all about? Stew Crew was born of the concept of “stewardship” or people using their time, resources and talents to assist in shaping a better community. To be a Stew Crew member, one does not have to be the best student, the best athlete or a best friend. Stew Crew members are students who are willing to work from the ground up to become effective leaders. Through organizing its own events, conducting its meetings and participating in PTA and community service projects, the Stew Crew members learn the importance of commitment, preparation and follow through as they guide their projects to successful completion. They also reap the personal rewards that come with helping, affirming and encouraging others! Since 2004, Stew Crew has met at least twice each month for a sit-down-on-the-floor lunch, in the gym or auditorium. Our teacher moderator, Ms. Cira often joins us. After lunch the Stew Crew takes care of business. They plan and carry out service projects that range from one time events, to those which require long range investigating, planning and cooperation with school and community leaders. One week they may do a spur of the moment school grounds clean up, on another it’s a fun create a Valentine Card for Senior Center session. No matter which extra projects each year’s Crew chooses to support, through the years Stew Crew members have always held elections, established officers, ran a school mentoring program and acted as a “bridge” committee between the PTA and students who choose to help with ongoing or annual events such as Market Day, Father Daughter Dance and I Madonnari. The Stew Crew also stocks a closet at Sutherland with an emergency supply of items that may be needed by students, classroom teachers are welcome to check the closet content list located in the Office, for items they think may be needed by any of their students. Every year, at the end of the school year, we have a celebration of our accomplishments. The officers turn over the leadership to the following year’s Stew Crew leaders. At graduation, Stew Crew members get special recognition; they wear a stole to signify a graduate who led and carried out projects to enhance their community. Coming Events The Sutherland Stew Crew is working with Aspire, a group that helps children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families. Aspire has a wonderful family library with titles on a variety of topics pertaining to raising healthy families and families with special needs. They also have children’s books that are great for siblings and classmates to help them understand their peers with special needs. Stew Crew is helping Aspire expand their library by collecting books and DVDs.
