The Stew Crew

The Stew Crew would like to leave a legacy at Sutherland. About January 2008, The Stew Crew will start their mentoring program. Each Stew Crew member will become a mentor to a younger student in the hopes that The Stew Crew will carry on at Sutherland. (All members will be graduating in May 2008. Parent leadership is necessary in the future. Will parents also consider joining us this year? It has been a very rewarding experience! Contact <moegavin@hotmail.com>)

What is Stew Crew all about?

The Stew Crew is a “bridge” committee between the PTA and students who choose to help as they are called.

Stew Crew was born of the concept of “stewardship” which engages people to use their time, treasures and talents to assist in shaping a wonderful community. To be a Stew Crew member, one does not have to be the best student, the best athlete or a best friend. It is simply made up of students that are willing to become leaders. They learn to understand the importance of kindness, helping, affirming and encouraging others, whether it be their peers or their teachers.

Since 2004, we meet together almost every Monday for a sit-down-on-the-floor lunch, in the gym or auditorium. Our school social worker, Nicole Dillon, will often join us. Through the years we have taught the kids about a governing system, about Robert’s Rules of Order; and we have held elections and have established officers.

We have filled a closet at Sutherland with possible items needed by students and their families. We have run canned goods drives for Maple Morgan Park Food Pantry as well as coat drives. We help with I Madonari, the Father/Daughter Dance, and whenever we are asked to help. Of course, we always have “What I Like About You” Day, where every student gets notes from their peers that are uplifting.  We have also sponsored “Thank You Teacher” Day; this is a time for students (and parents) to remember those teachers that have made such a difference in their lives.

A student from The Stew Crew tries to attend the PTA meeting each month and report back to the crew what is going on. We enjoy the time helping and laughing together.

Every year, at the end of the school year, we have a wonderful barbeque. We play basketball and other games to celebrate a successful year. Stew Crew members at graduation get special recognition; they wear a stole to signify a graduate who intentionally promoted giving back to their community. It is a lesson on stewardship they will never forget!
